Perched high on the escarpment, Blackheath has long drawn creatives with a taste for independence, wild landscapes, and community-minded living. With its crisp air, dramatic clifftops and strong local character, it’s a natural base for MTNS MADE members who forge original paths.

Blackheath is home to visual artists, musicians, writers, ceramicists, printmakers, and sculptors — many of whom have lived and worked here for decades, contributing to a vibrant, intergenerational arts scene. The town is also a stronghold for photographers, woodworkers, and multidisciplinary makers whose work reflects the intensity and rhythm of the local environment.

Cultural life in Blackheath is proudly grassroots, with venues like Blackheath Creative and the Blackheath Rhododendron Festival offering opportunities for local artists to connect with the public. Community studios, exhibition spaces, and music events animate the village across the seasons, while the national park just beyond the town’s edge fuels creative thinking in all its forms.

This is a place for doing the work — a place where big ideas are given time and space to mature. Many MTNS MADE members in Blackheath balance local projects with national commissions and regional residencies. The town’s slower pace and strong artistic networks offer a compelling alternative to city burnout.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
