The Rot and the Raw Embroidery

project description

"’The rot and the raw’ refers to the experiences and memories we hold in our bodies and how they continue to affect us. Some remain fresh like the day they occurred, when poked or prodded they sting just the same. Simultaneously, the others sit in your body to fester. They may not sting like the raw parts but linger in the background and ache just the same. The rot and the raw exist in a person's body as they can in a piece of fruit. Using fruit as a metaphor for the body highlights these similarities and creates a visceral and physical entity for consuming one another during these shared experiences, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable enough to be consumed." This exhibition consisted of photography and hand-embroidered works. The hand-embroidered works were naturally dyed using fruit, and the photography displays fruit in different stages of decay.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
