LOOKOUT

project description

LOOKOUT encapsulates my exploration and rediscovery of the natural landscape of the Blue Mountains from the time of the pandemic lockdowns. During this period, I was able to explore my own backyard. I’m very fortunate that it is a World Heritage Site of vast valleys and gorges, sandstone escarpments lined with the blue haze of the eucalyptus. I documented by sketching and photographing the scenery around me. This practice continued on after the pandemic, reconnecting me with the landscape I chose as my home. I predominantly paint with watercolour and fine pen but for this adventure I wanted to experiment with a broad range of mediums. There are so many breathtaking lookouts here in the Blue Mountains and I have chosen some based on my personal favourites, for their interesting architectural aspect and others for what might suit that style and medium. For me, I hope you to join me in discovering or reconnecting with your own backyard, as well as inspiring you to explore a new art medium for yourself.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
